This Model 1873 is Winchester's competition carbine: a lever-action in .45 Colt with a 20-inch round button-rifled barrel, a full-length tube holding 10 rounds and a 39-inch overall length. The action is tuned with a shorter, smoother lever throw for quick cycling. The furniture is Grade III/IV walnut with an oil finish; the receiver, side plates, lever, barrel band and carbine buttplate are color case-hardened; the barrel is polished blue. Standard iron sights are fitted, the top tang is drilled and tapped for a peep sight, and there is no manual safety.

This carbine is built for a cowboy action shooter who loads the same .45 Colt rounds in rifle and revolver and wants a lever that moves fast under the clock. The short-stroke action and high-grade wood set it apart from a field 1873. Utah's any-legal-weapon deer hunt runs October 17 to 25, but a pistol-cartridge carbine is a short-range tool; check the Guidebook on legal ammunition before considering it for game.
