How to Buy a Gun Online in Utah
You can order a firearm online and have it shipped to a licensed dealer you choose in Utah. The dealer receives the firearm, completes the federal paperwork with you and runs the background check before you take it home. This guide explains how that process works in Utah and what the state rules say, using the Utah notes we keep for this site.
How ordering online and shipping to a local dealer works
You place the order here and pick a licensed dealer in Utah at checkout. We ship the firearm to that dealer, not to your home. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship to your door. When the firearm reaches the dealer, you go to the dealer in person. You show photo identification, complete ATF Form 4473 and the dealer runs a background check. The firearm is handed over at pickup once the check is approved. Utah is a point-of-contact state, so the check goes to the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification and not to a county office.
Choose the dealer before you check out, since that dealer is the one who receives the firearm, runs the check and hands it over. Bring your photo identification on the day you pick up, because the dealer needs to see it before any paperwork starts. Expect the firearm to be ready for you once the background check has been approved, not before.
What the Utah rules say
Utah has no permit to purchase, no firearm registration and no state waiting period. The rules that apply when you buy from a dealer are these:
- You show photo identification at the dealer.
- You complete ATF Form 4473.
- The dealer runs a background check through the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification, which is the point of contact for Utah checks.
- The Bureau searches state criminal history and juvenile court records along with the federal databases.
- A Utah concealed firearm permit does not take the place of the background check.
- Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns.
- Once the Bureau approves the check, the dealer can release the firearm the same day.
Private sales between Utah residents need no state check, but selling a firearm to a prohibited person is a crime. The background check at the dealer is the step that screens each buyer, so it is the same step whether the firearm was ordered online or bought across the counter. Federal law sets the age rules, and the dealer must follow them whatever the order method.
Carrying after you buy
Since May 5, 2021, an adult 21 or older who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry it in Utah, loaded, concealed or openly, with no permit. The Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification still issues the concealed firearm permit statewide, and a county sheriff does not. The permit runs five years and needs a course from a BCI-certified instructor covering Utah law and safe handling, with no live-fire test. Residents aged 18 to 20 can apply for a provisional permit. Secure airport areas, courthouses, jails, federal buildings and posted private property stay off-limits, so check the restricted places listed in Utah law before you carry.
