Remington Ultimate Defense in 12 gauge is a five-round box of 00 buckshot. Each 2 3/4-inch shell holds nine lead pellets, a payload Remington lists at 1 1/8 ounces, leaving the muzzle at 1,325 feet per second. The load is designed for smoothbore barrels and throws a tight pattern at the short distances a defensive shotgun is actually used at. It is made in the USA.

This is the shell for a Utah homeowner who keeps a 12 gauge for the house. Nine 00 pellets in one pull of the trigger is the reason buckshot remains the standard home-defense load, and the 2 3/4-inch length fits any 12 gauge pump or semi-automatic with a standard chamber. The five-round box is the right size to pattern your gun at the range, see where the pellets land at the distances inside your home, and then keep the remainder loaded. Buy more than one box so you can test without using up what you keep on hand.
